Road Closure: South Westnedge Ave in front of Portage Central

As part of constructing the new Portage Central Middle School and McCamley Stadium, it is necessary to close a section of Westnedge Avenue in this area to complete underground utility work.

Beginning August 13, 2018,  S. Westnedge will be closed to all traffic between Portage Central Elementary’s driveway and the McCamley field parking lot driveway.

Traffic only will be allowed between Melody and the entrance of Central Middle School to allow access to the tennis courts, Stable and Central Middle School for drop-off, student athletes and coaches. Band camp participants should only enter on Mustang Drive.

Traffic will be allowed between Centre Ave. and the McCamley parking lot entrance to provide access to local businesses.

The goal is to complete this project prior to the significant traffic increase when school resume on September 4th.

Construction preparations begin on Portage Central Campus

Staging has begun for construction of the new Central Middle School, and of McCamley Field.  Starting April 9, 2018, commuters in the area will experience some new traffic patterns during times when students are arriving and leaving school.  We anticipate increased congestion between 7:15 to 8:00 am and again between 2:20 and 3:15 pm.

In order to accommodate construction, and continue to conduct school as usual, we have created a new temporary bus loop and parent drop-off loop. Our goal is student safety, while also being cognizant of the impact the new traffic flow will have on non-school traffic.  Admittedly this is a huge challenge, but we have worked closely with school leaders, the City of Portage and construction management to come up with the safest and least disruptive plan possible.  Please refer to the enclosed map to see the new configuration.

We know that under the best of circumstances, traffic can be a challenge as students arrive at school in the morning, and leave again in the afternoon.   We ask for your patience and understanding during the construction period.  We are encouraging all of our school families to give themselves extra time in the morning and arrive at school a few minutes early to avoid heavy traffic. We encourage you to take peak traffic congestion times into account if your commute takes you near the Portage Central area.

We will be monitoring the situation closely and making minor adjustments as necessary to keep our students safe and keep the traffic flowing as best as possible.
